COLLECTING 007 – CORGI Special Editions & Prototypes
WRITTEN &
COMPILED BY KEVIN HARPER |
|
The 40th Anniversary of
James Bond in the cinema afforded CORGI the opportunity to once again
launch new scale models for the collector's market, with lesser know
vehicles now available for the first time. This tradition continued over
the next two decades with each successive film having a new tie-in
release, or earlier models repackaged to achieve their maximum repurchase
potential. |

models were once again 1:36 scale, with the exception of the Kenworth

'Data Cards' Collection (2003) |
|
In 2003 CORGI once again
reissued eight 1:50 scale models in new packaging, this time including a clear plastic
display plinth with diorama backing and two data cards. A metal canister
containing all 8 models was also issued. Two special
limited edition twin packs containing vehicles from Goldfinger and
Die Another Day were also produced which included a pair of
hand-painted figures.
The entire series was
reissued once again in 2006 with new packaging (minus the data cards) and
new catalogue numbers, although the models were identical. The models in
the 2006 release were incorporated into the new ‘Showcase’ range which
replaced the data cards with a trivia game as part of the
blister-packaging. |

CORGI 'The
Directors Cut' Collection (2003) |
|
|
In 2003 CORGI Classic
reissued 10 earlier vehicles which were repackaged into a ‘Directors
Cut’ collection, and in 2006 added two new 1:36 scale Aston Martin models to tie in
with the release of Casino Royale. Two models in this series now included
figures to distinguish them from earlier releases.
The collection was also
issued again in 2006 with much harder-to-find black gun barrel packaging and labelled as
having ‘working features from the film’. Many of the models were now generally more detailed. The Goldfinger
Rolls-Royce now has painted white-walled tyres (not actually seen on the
car in the film), and included the Oddjob figure last seen in 1997. The
‘Little Nellie’ model is now completely re-tooled and far more
detailed than the earlier version, including a more realistic Sean
Connery figure as the pilot. |
