To celebrate the 30th
anniversary of the publication of John Gardner's LICENCE RENEWED, Orion
Books published all his continuation novels in paperback in the UK in five
batches throughout 2012. The novels were published in the same order as
the original hardback series, except for BROKENCLAW, which appeared out of
sequence. The series also included LICENCE TO KILL and GOLDENEYE, which
were novelizations of the screenplay for the respective films. The series
had been published four months earlier in the USA by
Pegasus Books with
the same covers, but using the American spellings for LICENSE RENEWED,
ROLE OF HONOR, LICENSE TO KILL, and the alternate title COLD FALL for John
Gardner's final James Bond novel, COLD.
The cover designs by Dan
Mogford, who used a ‘00’ motif on each paperback with a small silenced
Walther PPK representing the ‘seven’. Each cover used a different solid
colour and featured a simple icon that represented a significant plot
element for each story - an idea initiated by Raymond Hawkey on his
ground-breaking covers for the Ian Fleming PAN paperbacks, which sold in
their millions at the height of ‘Bondmania’ in the mid-1960s. A box set
containing all five titles was also issued in 2012. |
