(28) In the casino, Leiter is phoning a contact
about releasing the story of Le
Chiffre's intended defeat to the newspapers, when he is held at gunpoint
by Surok, one of the Russian agent's henchmen.
(29) SUROK: Mr. Leiter that money you have, would
you kindly put it on the table. I believe it to be 26
million francs. We want it!
LEITER: That makes it very awkward because I want it too!
SUROK: You have exactly 10 seconds to do as I say. |
|
|
|
|
(30) The telephone rings both Surok and Leiter
hesitate to answer it. The chef de partie goes to take
the call, enabling Leiter to hand him the money for
safe-keeping until Bond collects it that evening. Surok
is foiled, and walks away.
(31) That evening Bond collects the 26 million francs
from the cashier.
(32) BOND: How did you make out last night at baccarat?
LEITER: I lost my shirt! Maybe you're a bad teacher.
Cigarette? Good luck and make sure you clean him out.
BOND: Thanks. Sorry you lost your shirt.
(33) Bond 'eyes-up' Le Chiffres bodyguards. Valerie
introduces Bond to Herr Ziffer. Bond comments that he
has always heard of him as Le Chiffre. "Well that's the
same," explains Le Chiffre, "you see it's a nickname of
mine. After the war I was a displaced person just a
number on a passport. Le Chiffre means a mere cipher
seems a suitable name."
BOND: May I say you're a very important cipher.
LE CHIFFRE: You flatter me sir. Ah we play tonite huh!
Good luck! |
|
|
(34) Bond is told
there is a telephone call for him. He leaves the gaming
table and is greeted by a flat lifeless voice on the
other end of the telephone.
(35) The voice tells him: "Mr. Bond this is a
friend. Mr. Bond it maybe you still have a certain
attachment for a young woman by the name of Valerie
Mathis. You should, know, if you win tonite she will
lose ohh nothing more important than her life! |
|
|
|
BOND: This
young lady is a part of your own organisation, why should it
concern me if she dies.
VOICE: Perhaps it does not, but the fact is still indisputable
if you win, she will lose her life. Pardon me for interrupting
your game, I only wish to pass on the warning. Goodbye. Bond tells Leiter, "Keep an eye on that girl, on Valerie
Mathis. Keep an eye on her." |

(36) ACT
II [CARD
GAME SLIDESHOW]
Le Chiffre holds the shoe, and is the Bank (37)
Le Chiffre plays 9 his opponent plays 7. Le Chiffre
plays 7 his opponent plays 4. With the Bank at 4 million
francs the two other players at the table decline further
play. This leaves just Bond and Le Chiffre to do battle.
(38) Bond cries "Banco" and enters the game, much
to Le Chiffre's delight.
(39) Bond plays 9 (40) Le Chiffre plays two
picture cards Baccarat. Bond wins the first hand.
(41) Le Chiffre opens his cigarette case, openly
displaying one of the three razor blades he carries.
Le Chiffre plays 7 Bond plays 5. Le Chiffre wins.
(42) Le Chiffre plays 9 Bond plays 7. Le Chiffre wins
again.
The Bank now stands at 8 million francs. Le Chiffre
plays 6 Bond plays 3. Le Chiffre wins yet again. The
Bank is now at 16 million francs. Bond puts the rest of
his money in the Bank. Le Chiffre plays 9 Bond plays 7.
Le Chiffre has won again and Bond is cleaned out. Le
Chiffre's henchman Zoltan tells him, "You have beaten him;
it was the last of his money". |
|
|
|
|
LE CHIFFRE: I
need 80 (million francs).
ZOLTAN: You won't lose tonite! The Bank stands at 32 million
francs.
(43) Bond is handed an envelope. It contains money and a
note that reads, "Here are 35,000,000 francs you have to
win." By this time the other clientele of the casino are
watching the card duel between the two men merely as passive
bystanders. Le Chiffre plays 3
Bond plays 4. Bond wins. ZOLTAN: You lost. You lost
a fortune.
LE CHIFFRE: I still have 23 (million francs).
ZOLTAN: But now he can afford to lose.
LE CHIFFRE: I may win. The
Bank is broke, so Le Chiffre opens a new bank at 23
million francs. Bond matches Le Chiffre's wager.
Bond plays 9 Le Chiffre plays two picture cards
Baccarat.
Le Chiffre is cleaned out "Well" is his only comment,
directed straight at Bond as he leaves the table. Bond
has won 87 million francs. Zoltan, one of Le Chiffre's
henchmen moves slowly around behind Bond. |
|
|
|
(44)
ZOLTAN: My cane is in your back, but it is a gun not a
cane, and can blow out the base of your spine without a
sound. You will appear to have fainted. Before I count
10 you will accompany me to the office and give me the
money. If you call for help I shall fire. On the
count of six Bond throws himself backwards, causing
Zoltan to drop his cane gun and run away. Bond then
realises Valerie is missing. |
|
|
(45)
He anxiously asks Leiter where she has gone.
LEITER: I lost sight of her in the excitement. Look I
even followed her to the cashier when she went to get
that money for you.
BOND: When she went to get the money! You mean that 35
million francs came from her!
LEITER: Every penny of it. |
|
|
|
|
|
Bond
collects the cheque for 87 million francs from the
cashier's desk. Bond and Leiter search the casino
unsuccessfully for Valerie, and Leiter reminds Bond to
put the cheque in a safe place. Bond throws the 'deadly
tube' to Leiter telling him, "You put this in Scotland
Yard's Black Museum." Leiter discovers from the chef de partie that Le Chiffre has also been searching for
Valerie (46)
Leiter confronts Zoltan and threatens him
with his own cane/gun in an attempt to discover the
whereabouts of Valerie. Zoltan denies he knows anything
but does say he saw Le Chiffre leaving the casino for
the hotel. Leiter telephones Bond at his hotel where he
has been searching for Valerie and warns him that Le
Chiffre is on his way over. He stresses it is imperative
that Bond hide the cheque. However, Bond seems more
concerned about the girl and tells Leiter, "You keep
after Valerie." (47)
Bond secretes the cheque behind the number plate on the
door of his room as the telephone rings. It is the same
voice who warned him in the casino. Bond is told that Le
Chiffre will give them both one more chance, "Miss
Mathis will live in exchange for the cheque." |
|
|
Valerie enters the room while Bond is still engaged on the
telephone. He is openly relieved to see her, believing she has
escaped the clutches of Le Chiffre and his cohorts. Bond makes
it clear to the 'voice' that he will not pass over the cheque
then Le Chiffre and his two bodyguards enter the room, gun
in hand. |
|
(48) LE
CHIFFRE: Stand still Mr. Bond. Well it, it seems we have
a few points of mutual interest to discuss uhh! Such as
such as that cheque for 87 million francs. Money which
was partly supplied by the French Secret Service,
through its agent our little friend Valerie. Yes, ha ha
Valerie Mathis agent of the Deuxieme Bureau huhh! Oh I
only found that out today. Of course you would have died
at once but I, I thought I'd hold the thread of your
life over this, this American. Not that he seemed to
care he, he still put his job first.
VALERIE: He had too!
LE CHIFFRE: Maybe. Maybe in any case it was a mistake.
If I would have known that the French had supplied you
with funds in case you needed more money. (49) BOND:
Valerie, Valerie, why didn't you tell me you were with
the French. (50) LE CHIFFRE: Oh I, I think I can answer
that. Oh as you almost certainly know Mr. Bond, no
secret agent can ever be quite sure when another agent
isn't working for the other side, although I, I always
thought that mutual love meant mutual trust!
VALERIE: Do you love me Jimmy?
(51) LE CHIFFRE: Ha!-Ha! He is much too sensible to
answer that, in any case neither of you wants the other
to be hurt huh? Very comfortable considering the fact
that I, that I want that cheque for 87 million francs.
Yes Mr. Bond you've almost destroyed me you've almost
succeeded. In fact my life depends on that cheque. So
by the way does yours! |
