The Face Of James Bond

DIAMONDS ARE FOREVER strip #470

John McLusky continued to illustrate the strips for the Daily Express working through the books in order of their publication. December 1958 saw the beginning of LIVE AND LET DIE, which was the first of three stories to be adapted by Henry Gammidge, who partnered McLusky on all the subsequent strips, with the exception of DR. NO (which was adapted by Peter O'Donnell). Eight more stories followed until the fateful appearance of THUNDERBALL in December 1961.

ABOVE: These two panels from McLusky's CASINO ROYALE would hardly be considered politically correct in this day and age, but it's a great example of how much the world we live in has changed in the last 40 years.
BELOW: Cannily, Fleming had Bond fall deeply in love with Vesper Lynd in CASINO ROYALE before he discovers she is a double agent, who ultimately commits suicide, allowing his character to emotionally distance himself from the majority of women whom he comes into contact with in the course of his adventures - until of course he meets Tracy. Fleming may have had a much more constructed overview of where his character was ultimately going than he has been given credit for, and his stories may have reflected his own emotional feelings over the 11-year period he wrote the James Bond novels.
