When we came down to the almost deserted dining room
we were greeted by Maria, a pretty young girl from Bavaria who spoke
good English, but with a slight American accent picked up from the
time she had lived there. We were shown to our table which was by
the window in the corner of the room. Maria, who would be our
waitress for all but one day of our week’s stay lit the candle on
our table, which was very tastefully dressed, before offering us the
menu. The food we were to discover at the Edelweiss was excellent,
and like the table dressing it was always imaginatively well
presented. However, the first thing we were both up for ordering
were two very large glasses of the strong local beer! |

Following dinner, despite feeling
tired and in need of our beds, we agreed to go for a walk round the
village to walk off the meal and get our bearings. We crunched our
way through the snow and noticed many of the houses and shops were
lit up with fairy lights and, in some cases, Christmas trees with
what still appeared to be decorations! However, none of these things
actually looked incongruous, because, despite it already being a
week into the New Year. It all appeared very natural and in-keeping
with the place. As we walked along chatting my eyes were drawn to
look up towards where the Schilthorn mountain, I assumed would be.
Suddenly I saw, with the help of the moon, a dim light very high up
and the outline of a building and a shiver ran down my spine. Was
this Piz Gloria? |
