To coincide with the 50th
Anniversary of the completion of CASINO ROYALE in 1952, Penguin Books Limited
published the entire Ian Fleming James Bond series on 4th April 2002, with 007 IN NEW
YORK making its UK book debut as part of the OCTOPUSSY AND THE LIVING
DAYLIGHTS anthology. The short story was originally first published in the
New York Herald Tribune in October 1963 as ‘Agent 007 in New York’,
but was subsequently renamed 007 IN NEW YORK and included the 1964 US edition
of Thrilling Cities - a collection of travelogues written by
Ian Fleming in 1959/60.
007 IN NEW YORK was first
printed in the UK when it appeared in The Sunday Times Magazine supplement on 7th
November 1999 accompanied by a specially commissioned illustration by Lyndon
Hayes. The magazine itself sported a cover by James Bond poster artist
Robert McGinnis.

The new paperbacks were
released simultaneously with the Anniversary hardback editions that shared
the same abstract wraparound photographic covers by Toby McFarland Pond.
The hardbacks had just 1,000 copies printed for each title and retailed at
£17.99; whereas the paperbacks were priced at £5.99 (later rising to
£7.99) and had a larger print run for each title ranging from 5,000 to
8,500 copies. In 2002 a Limited Edition box set of 2,000 copies was also
produced exclusively for the UK high street retail store Past Times. |

On April 1,
2010 FROM RUSSIA, WITH LOVE was issued once more as part of
Penguin's ‘Decades’ series, which celebrated the publisher's
75th anniversary. The series consisted of five seminal novels
from each decade from the 1950s to the 1980s. Sporting a stylish
new cover by renowned pop artist Sir Peter Blake, this paperback
had a print-run of only 5,000 copies. Penguin later celebrated
the 50th Anniversary of their ‘Modern Classics’ range with the
publication of a paperback edition of THE LIVING DAYLIGHTS. The
‘Mini Modern Classics’ series represented the best short fiction
from the Penguin back catalogue, with 50 titles printed - one
from each year of the series history. With another small print
run of just 5,000 copies, the 90-page paperback also included
Ian Fleming's 1959 short story FROM A VIEW TO A KILL. The series
was also issued as a deluxe box set containing all 50 titles and
priced at £150.
On November 16, 2023 Ian Fleming
Publications announced that FROM RUSSIA, WITH LOVE would be reissued by
Penguin Books in June 2024 as part of their ‘Modern Classics Crime and
Espionage’ series. |
