Many of the James
Bond films had advance 1-Sheet posters (27" X 41") produced by the
National Screen Service for display ahead of the release to remind
cinemagoers that a new 007 adventure was coming soon. These were
replaced with the final 1-Sheet once the film was in release*.
Advance posters generally had alternate artwork to the final
release version, and in the case of Moonraker (1979) there
were two different styles (both painted by Daniel Goozee) with
amended text as the release date drew closer. By the time of the
Daniel Craig era several variant posters were originally released
with alternate artwork and new release dates prior to being rated
by the Motion Picture Association of America. Most styles were
adopted to advertise the film ahead of release in other
territories, with text and credits adjusted for different
languages. More recent films have adopted the drip-feed approach
with the release of a teaser poster, and then an advance 1-Sheet,
often followed by a variant final version.
With many posters
now supplied to cinemas in digital format for use in electronic
light-boxes, the days of the printed poster may be numbered as
changes can easily be made to the files and new versions provided.
However, the release date of the highly anticipated 25th James
Bond Film No Time To Die went through several
postponements, and the printed versions of these posters now
command high prices on the collectors’ market. The oft-delayed
release has created several variant versions of the No Time To
Die teaser/advance 1-Sheets.
*The You Only
Live Twice advance poster was originally issued in two
versions. The preliminary advance teaser was first issued with the
bottom portion blacked out. In subsequent weeks a second style
with the full art was released [left]. |
