2012, The Complete James Bond Collection from Penguin Books under
the ‘Vintage 007’ imprint, saw all Ian Fleming's Bond novels and short
story anthologies collected once again with uniform covers. This time a
simple graphic motif taken from the novel appeared on the retro style
covers, and where one did not present itself, the designers resorted to
using bullet holes. Random House creative director Suzanne Dean briefed
the designers to be inspired by the famed American graphic designer Saul
Bass (1920-1996). In 2013 the series added Fleming's two non-fiction books
The Diamond Smugglers (1957) and Thrilling Cities (1963),
and in 2015 a special edition of GOLDFINGER featuring an excerpt from the
upcoming TRIGGER MORTIS by Anthony Horowitz. The continuation novel
TRIGGER MORTIS is set in 1957, two weeks after the events of GOLDFINGER,
and features the return of Pussy Galore.
2015 also saw the
publication of The Spectre Trilogy - a collection of THUNDERBALL,
ON HER MAJESTY'S SECRET SERVICE and YOU ONLY LIVE TWICE. The first James
Bond continuation novel COLONEL SUN (1968) by Kingsley Amis [writing as
Robert Markham] also joined the ‘Vintage 007’ series on October 15, 2015.
The final title in
the Penguin ‘Vintage 007’ range was a reprint of CASINO ROYALE, issued on
May 31, 2018 to coincide with the publication of FOREVER AND A DAY, the
second continuation novel by Anthony Horowitz. FOREVER AND A DAY is a
prequel to CASINO ROYALE and follows Bond as he earns his licence to kill
and explores the origin story of Fleming’s iconic character. The new
edition of CASINO ROYALE also featured an introduction by Anthony
Horowitz. Penguin Books’ ten year licence expired in 2022, and it was
announced on October 5th that Ian Fleming Publications Ltd would issue the
James Bond novels in paperback
under their own imprint in 2023. |

As part of their UK
publishing deal Vintage Books also acquired the rights to Ian Fleming's
two non-fiction titles The Diamond Smugglers (1957) and
Thrilling Cities (1963), and these were added to the series in 2013.
In addition to the reprint of GOLDFINGER, which included an exclusive
excerpt from the upcoming TRIGGER MORTIS by Anthony Horowitz, Vintage
Books also issued The Spectre Trilogy (an omnibus of THUNDERBALL,
ON HER MAJESTY'S SECRET SERVICE and YOU ONLY LIVE TWICE) and COLONEL SUN
in October 2015, and a box set containing all 14 Ian Fleming novels. In
2018 DR. NO was selected to be part of a new ‘Heroes and Villains’ series
of Vintage Books paperbacks, each of which had a famous quote from the
hero of the book on the front cover, and one from the villain on the rear.
The final Vintage
Books title was a limited edition reprint of CASINO ROYALE with a new cover
by Kris Potter. The paperback was issued to coincide with the publication
of FOREVER AND A DAY, the second James Bond continuation novel by Anthony
Horowitz, which is a prequel to CASINO ROYALE. The author also provided a
new introduction to Ian Fleming's first James Bond novel. |
