Two actors were
screen tested for the role of James Bond, signed a contract and
officially announced in the press as the new 007 - but never actually
appeared in the film to which they were attached.
In 1970 American
actor John Gavin tested and signed to play James Bond in
Diamonds Are Forever, but distributor and financier United
Artists ultimately convinced original 007 Sean Connery to return
for a record-breaking fee. John Gavin's contract was paid in full,
although he was also briefly considered again for the role in
Live And Let Die (1973).
In 1986 Irish actor
Pierce Brosnan was tested and signed to play James Bond
in The Living Daylights, after the cancellation of his US
TV-series Remington Steele. With renewed interest in the
actor, production company MTM Enterprises reversed their
decision to cancel the show, and Brosnan was obliged to fulfil the
final year of his seven-year contract and work on the fifth season
of Remington Steele. Timothy Dalton was then cast as James
Bond. |
